Toddler Friendly Shark Week Programming

Finding Nemo: "Fish are friends, not food!" In one of the best animated shark scenes ever, the sharks in Finding Nemo have formed a support group to curb their appetite for fish, but you should never trust a shark on a diet! The three main character sharks in this classic scene in the movie are: Bruce, the intimidating great white; Anchor, the hammerhead; and Chum, the mako shark. The best thing about these sharks? -- their adorable Aussie accents. (Rated G)

Shark Tale: In this funny fish tale, a small fish named Oscar (voiced by Will Smith) takes the credit for walloping a shark and becomes known as "Sharkslayer." But, Oscar's lie soon gets him caught in a net of deceit as he tries to maintain his celebrity status, get the right girl and avoid being caught by an angry mob boss who is a great white (Robert De Niro). Shark Tale is rated PG, for some mild language and crude humor, and the language and innuendo make the movie less suited for very young children, despite the colorful animation and comedic characters. (Rated PG)

The Reef: In The Reef, a young fish named Pi loses his parents when they are caught up in a net. Now on his own, Pi is thankfully taken under the fins of a family of porpoises who help him journey to The Reef to make a new home. When they finally arrive, Pi falls for a beautiful fish named Cordelia, but unfortunately, she is already spoken for by a bully of a shark. In fact, the great white is such a bully that Cordelia feels compelled to marry him in order to save Pi. With a little help from a wise and martial arts savvy turtle, though, Pi just might have a chance to win the girl after all. (Rated G)

The Little Mermaid: While sharks don't get a lot of screen time in this Disney classic, Glut the great white shark gives Ariel and Flounder quite a fright. In a scene both suspenseful and action-packed, Ariel and her little friend run into the shark while they are exploring a ship wreck. (Rated G)

Rubbadubbers: Finbar The Mighty Movie Star: Finbar dreams he's a mighty glamorous movie star. In Director Tubb's movie, can Finbar rescue Miss Winona from the Mighty Ferocious Crocodile?(Not Rated)

Team Umizoomi: Meet Shark Car: UmiFriend, get ready to meet the super cool Shark Car! Join Team Umizoomi as they play with their friend, Jose, and his favorite toy, Shark Car (a car that looks like a shark)! Plus, meet other special toys including Sparkle Pup, Stompasaurus, and more!  (Rated G)

Octonauts: Calling All Sharks: Dive into adventures with your favorite underwater explorers, the Octonauts! Join brave Captain Barnacles, daredevil ex-pirate Kwazii, and medic Peso Penguin, along with other Octonauts as they explore the world s oceans, rescue the creatures who live there, and protect their habitats above and below the waves! On this exciting DVD, join the Octonauts aboard the Octopod as they come face to face with a trio of pesky Cookiecutter Sharks, look after an injured Lemon Shark and stop a Whitetip Shark who is chasing the Gup-A!(Not Rated)

Kenny the Shark, Vol. 1 - Feeding Frenzy: Kenny is a shark who got bored with his ocean life and decided to go live on land. He meets and becomes best friends with an 11-year-old girl named Kat, who keeps him as a pet and is the only person who can talk to him. (Not Rated)

Books To Read

Clark the Shark - Clark the Shark is a great read-aloud picture book, with fun rhythm and rhyme, from the ever-popular Bruce Hale and Guy Francis. Clark is a shark with zing, bang, and BOOM. Clark zooms into school, crashes through the classroom, and is rowdy at recess. Clark loves life—but when his enthusiasm is too much for his friends, Clark's teacher, Mrs. Inkydink, helps him figure out a way to tone it down. Clark the Shark celebrates boisterous enthusiasm—and knowing when it's time for indoor voices!

Shark in the Park - A story with a phonics-based text, designed to help children learn to read. Some pages have fold-out flaps which give new readers a chance to guess what will happen next. A Shark!: All About Sharks (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library) - In this latest installment of the Cat in the Hat's Learning Library, the Cat introduces beginning readers to all kinds of sharks! From the smallest (the dwarf lantern) to the largest (the whale shark), the most notorius (the great white) to the most obscure (the goblin), the Cat explains why sharks have lots of teeth but no bones; how their tough skin helps them swim fast and stay clean (inspiring scientists--and bathing suit manufacturers!); how pores along the sides of their bodies help them sense prey; that they have more to fear from us than we do from them, and much, much more! Written by Bonnie Worth and Illustrated by Joe Mathieu.

I'm a Shark - Shark's not afraid of anything. The dark? Nah. A big mean bear? Don't make him laugh! But there is one thing that even Shark fears. . . . Can you guess what it is? Written and Illustrated by Bob Shea.

The Three Little Fish And The Big Bad Shark - A hilarious retelling of THE THREE LITTLE PIGS, with foil on the cover! "Little fish, little fish, let me come in." "Not by the skin of my finny fin fin!" "Then I'll munch, and I'll crunch, and I'll smash your house in!" Mama tells her three little fish that it's time to make their own homes. Jim builds his house of seaweed, but the big bad shark munches it up. Tim builds his house of sand, but the shark crunches it up. It's smart Kim who sets up house in an old sunken ship! Children will delight in this silly story with funny, eye-popping illustrations. And there's foil on the cover! Written by Will Grace and Ken Geist and Illustrated by Julia Gorton.
